WIAA girls basketball: Lincoln rally falls short in loss

The No. 5 seeded Manitowoc Lincoln girls basketball team fell to host No. 4 Green Bay Southwest 48-42 in the WIAA Girls State Basketball Tournament regional semifinal on Friday.

Alyssa Fischer led Lincoln with 11 points while teammate Alyssa Grotegut added 10 of her own.

Both sides were playing patient in the early going, but the Ships built an 8-4 lead with 2:15 to play in the first quarter.

One reason Lincoln (16-7) was able to take the lead was the inside play of Kali Hackmann and Grotegut. The duo converted all four free throw attempts after drawing contact.

Unfortunately for the Ships, the Trojans (15-8) finished the quarter on a 5-0 run and led 9-8 after one frame, a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Hailee Kotche split a pair at the line to level the game at 9-9 to start the second quarter. The action slowed down afterward, with Southwest taking an 11-9 lead, which stayed put for several minutes.

Lincoln’s offense stayed stagnate as the Trojans hit back-to-back 3-pointers to extend the Ships’ deficit to 10 at 19-9. Katherine Wolowicz scored Lincoln’s first field goal of the second quarter in over seven minutes with roughly 1:30 left in the half.

Wolowicz laid in another basket just before half, but the Ships’ trailed 22-13 at halftime after being outscored 13-5 in the quarter.

The 3’s kept raining in for Southwest, hitting their first two of the second half to take a 28-15 lead. After the Trojans had extended their lead to 32-15, Fischer’s 3-pointer capped a 10-0 run to end the third quarter.

The Ships turned things around behind a strong defense and cut their deficit to 32-25 entering the fourth.

Lincoln’s momentum carried over into the final frame, scoring the first basket of the quarter to get within five. A free throw by Southwest snapped a 12-0 Ships run.

Fischer hit her second 3 of the game to get Lincoln within three, but the Trojans answered right back with a 3-pointer of their own. It was a beginning of a game-changing run by Southwest, which took a 39-31 lead with 3:31 left in the fourth.

The Ships’ Shawny Gabriel hit a 3-pointer with 2:19 left to pull her team within five at 40-35. In the end, Lincoln’s rally ended just short despite a valiant effort.
