The No. 3 seeded Roncalli girls basketball team held off a late charge from visiting No. 6 Brillion to win the WIAA Girls State Basketball Tournament Division 3 regional semifinal on Friday 48-40.
The Jets held a slim 10-6 lead after the first quarter but erupted for 17 points in the second en route to a 27-14 halftime lead. Roncalli carried a 40-23 lead into the final frame and held off Brillion despite being outscored 17-8 in the fourth quarter.
Roncalli got a team-high 16 points from Rachel Moczynski while teammate Catherine Taddy added 15 of her own. Taddy did most of her damage from beyond the arc, draining a game-high three 3-pointers.
Tori Lemke paced Brillion (12-12) with 16, but the Jets defense contained the rest of the Lions to just 24 points as no one else for Brillion scored more than seven individually.
Both sides were nearly even at the free-throw line, with the Jets converting 14-of-27 attempts compared to the Lions 15-of-26.
Roncalli (15-8) continues its postseason run today on the road at No. 2 Wrightstown (19-4) with tip off scheduled for 7 p.m. The Jets have split the season series with the Tigers, winning the first matchup on the road 45-44 in late November before falling at home 44-34 in mid January.
