Division 1 regional semifinals

Fond du Lac 1, Menasha 0

At Fond du Lac, the Cardinals, who led the Bluejays by a goal when their WIAA Division 1 regional semifinal was suspended on Thursday due to lightning with 29 minutes left, maintained that lead when play was resumed on Friday.

Fond du Lac scored its goal in the 10th minute as Kelsey Schneider scored.

“We had three or four very good opportunities to get goals,” Menasha coach Peter LaCourse said. “Their goalie had to make some very good saves. The wind (on Thursday) was a great momentum for the team that had it. They were able to capitalize early in the first half. We gave a great effort but just weren’t able to get one in.”

Megan Jones had 19 saves for the Bluejays, who dropped both of their matches to the Cardinals this season by 1-0 scores.

“The defense led by Kelsey Blob did an outstanding job,” LaCourse said. “We played them as well as we played anyone.”

Hartford 4, Appleton East 2

At Hartford, the Orioles scored twice in the second half to defeat the Patriots in a game that was resumed two minutes into the second half after severe weather forced its suspension on Thursday.

Makenzie Morgen accounted for both Appleton East goals.

“What’s really hard is that, in the last three games, we had scored a total of nine goals in the second half,” East coach Brandon Schnese said. “These younger players take time to find their groove. We scored our second goal with two minutes left in the first half. For five to 10 minutes before that, you could see the momentum changing.

“Once the game is called, you lose that flow and momentum.”

Appleton East finished the season (6-8-1).

“The game against Menasha is where we finally came together and clicked,” Schnese said. “That game, a few younger players just stepped up and became tenacious. It took some time to get us there but once we built up that work ethic and found our groove, we started finding our confidence.”
