Manitowoc Lincoln sophomore Bailey Budnik got past her first opponent, then made short work of her second in the opening day of the WIAA Division 1 Girls Tennis Tournament.
Budnik opened her day at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison on Thursday by getting past No. 12 seed Jennifer Skonieczny (21-8) of Cedarburg, 3-6, 6-4 (8).
She then rolled past Brookfield East junior Sadie Spahn (23-8) 6-3, 6-1 to advance to the Round of 16.
Next up for Budnik (29-4) is Whitefish Bay senior Lily Hayes (22-5), the No. 5 seed.
Budnik was the lone area player to compete and advance on Thursday.
Competing in the Division 1 doubles tournament, Ships sophomore Sydney Verbauwhede and senior Michaela Jagemann (19-12) fell 6-4, 6-4 to Homestead senior Kate Weitzer and sophomore Madeline Slicker(22-9).
In the Division 2 singles field, Roncalli junior Chloe Kitzerow (20-3) lost 6-1, 6-0 to freshman Emma Sango (21-7) of Madison Edgewood. Sango was No. 6 seed in the field.
And Roncalli’s duo of junior Hannah Kubsh and sophomore Madeline Salutz (11-10) fell to junior Megan Dubois and sophomore Alyssa Carew (18-6) of Appleton Xavier, 7-5, 4-6 (2) in the D2 doubles tournament.
Jets’ sophomore Tallie Piaskowski (19-3), the No. 3 seed, earned a first-round bye and plays today at 11:30 a.m. against senior Maria Neff (22-8) of Eau Claire Regis in a second-round matchup.
