For the second straight season, Roncalli’s Tallie Piaskowski entered the final day of the WIAA Girls Division 2 Tennis Individual State Tournament with a chance for a title.
Piaskowski (22-4) ended up taking third at D2 singles on Saturday at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison a season after finishing second with partner Abby Halla in the D2 doubles flight.
“I thought it would different this year being in singles instead of doubles,” Piaskowski said. “There’s better players in singles but it was always fun to play with Abby.”
The day began for Piaskowski, the No. 3 seeded player in the flight, with a rematch against No. 2 Jenna Zimmerman (31-3) of Racine St. Catherine’s in the semifinals. The duo had met earlier in the season, with Zimmerman prevailing 6-3, 6-2. Unfortunately for Piaskowski, the outcome was the same as Zimmerman won 7-5, 6-2.
“I knew it’d be hard,” Piaskowski added about her matchup with Zimmerman. “She’s a senior so I knew she’d be tough.”
Piaskowski then met up with Brookfield Academy’s Michelle Sikes (20-5) in the third-place match which Piaskowski won 6-2, 6-1.
In two seasons, Piaskowski now has a medal in two different flights and she says she’s better for having done both.
“Doubles really helped me get better as a player,” Piaskowski said. “I never used to work on volleys before doubles so last season really helped improve my game.”
Piaskowski and Roncalli coach Dave Mueller are already looking ahead towards next season when the Jets standout returns as the highest finisher. Both state finalists, Zimmerman and state champion Grace Larrain of Newman Catholic are seniors.
“Tallie plays a ton and plays lots of tough competition,” Mueller said. “Who knows what can happen, but I see nothing but good things ahead.”
