WIAA girls tennis: Local players awarded state tourney berths

Several area players were named special qualifiers for the WIAA State Tournament to be held Thursday through Saturday at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.

The Manitowoc Lincoln doubles team comprised of Sydney Verbauwhede and Michaela Jagemann (19-11) were among those selected and will tangle with Homestead’s Kate Weitzer and Madeline Slicker (21-9) in the opening round Thursday at 12:30 p.m.

Roncalli’s Chloe Kitzerow and doubles team of Hannah Kubsh and Maddie Salutz were also added to the field.

Kitzerow (20-2) will take on Emma Sango (20-7) of Edgewood Thursday at 3:30 p.m.

Kubsh and Salutz (11-9) will square off with Appleton Xavier’s Megan Dubois and Alyssa Carew (17-6) Thursday at 5 p.m.

Tallie Piaskowski (19-3) who automatically qualified for the event, received the No. 3 seed and a first round bye. She will face the winner of a match between Maria Neff (21-8) of Eau Claire Regis and Anna Smith (12-14) of La Crosse Aquinas Friday at 11:30 a.m.

Lincoln’s Bailey Budnik, also an automatic qualifier, will face Jennifer Skonieczny (21-7) of Cedarburg at 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
