Roncalli’s Tallie Piaskowski recorded two wins Friday to advance to the Division 2 singles semifinals at the WIAA Girls Tennis Individual State Tournament at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.
After receiving a bye in the opening round, Piaskowski (21-3) defeated Maria Neff of Eau Claire Regis 6-2, 6-1. She then topped Edgewood Sacred Heart’s Emma Sango 6-1, 6-0. Sango eliminated Roncalli’s Chloe Kitzerow in the first round on Thursday.
Next up for the Jets’ standout is Jenna Zimmerman (30-2) from Racine St. Catherine’s in a semifinal matchup today at 9 a.m. It will be second time that the pair have met this season, with Zimmerman defeating Piaskowski 6-3, 6-2 on Sept. 21.
Piaskowski is guaranteed two matches today win or lose, although a win would mean a second straight trip to a State Championship match.
Last season, along with partner Abby Halla, Piaskowski reached the D2 doubles title match with an undefeated record before losing to Lauren Keller and Morgan Molitor of Edgewood 6-2,6-4.
Manitowoc Lincoln’s Bailey Budnik was bounced from the tournament in the quarterfinals of the D1 singles draw after she fell to No. 5 seeded Lily Hayes of Whitefish Bay 6-1, 6-2. It’s the second straight season Budnik has failed to advance to the final day of competition, having lost in the second round last season.
Budnik finishes the season with a mark of 29-5.
