Sheboygan North’s softball team built a big enough lead early Tuesday, and hung on late to earn an 8-4 win over West Bend West in a WIAA Division 1 regional semifinal at home.

The Golden Raiders (10-11), seeded eighth, opened up an 8-1 lead through five innings before the No. 9 Spartans scored three runs over the final two frames.

Hazel Dulmes went 3-for-3 with three runs and three RBI to lead North at the plate. Taylor Bruinooge also was 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI and Erica Brahan added two hits and drove in two runs.

Raven Gmach got the win, allowing three runs on seven hits with three strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work. Abby Van Der Puy came on in relief and allowed a run in 1.1 innings.

“It was a good game,” North coach Josh Hoffer said. “It was a well-played game.”

North travels to top-seeded Oshkosh West on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. for a regional final.

Kimberlee Weimann threw nine strikeouts and gave up six hits in the Redwings’ season-ending regional loss on the road to the Orioles.

Weimann also scored South’s lone run in the sixth inning after advancing on a single and later crossing home plate on a wild pitch.

“Kimberlee pitched a great game and kept us in it the whole way,” coach Darren Weimann said in a statement. “We just couldn’t get any solid hits.”

South managed just two hits and a walk. Besides Weimann’s single in the sixth inning, Ammariah Her supplied the only other hit for the Redwings.

South finished the season with a 6-15 record.
