WIAA volleyball: Area squads ready for regional semis

By

Five area teams will be in action tonight through three divisions as the WIAA State Volleyball regional semifinals begin.

Every team except Manitowoc Lincoln, which earned a bye as the No. 3 seed and hosts No. 14 Menasha in the Division 1 bracket, reached the semis via a win on Tuesday.

The Ships and Blue Jays haven’t faced each this season but share many opponents with Lincoln holding a considerable edge in victories.

The areas lone team to advance in D2, Kiel, did so in dramatic fashion. The No. 10 Raiders knocked off the No. 7 Red Knights of Milwaukee Lutheran in five games. Next up for Kiel is a meeting with Eastern Wisconsin Conference foe host No. 2 Sheboygan Falls, which won both meetings in the regular season.

In D3, three area teams are still alive in No. 5 Manitowoc Lutheran, No. 8 Reedsville and No. 10 Valders although all three are on the road as the lower seed.

The Lancers haven’t met No. 4 St. Mary’s Springs this season but have faced several common opponents, including each having victories over local squads Mishicot and Roncalli.

Both the Panthers and Vikings have tough tests, with Reedsville taking on No. 1 Oostburg and Valders No. 2 Howards Grove.

The Vikings and Tigers will meet for the first time this season although both sides have faced St. Mary Central, with Howards Grove earning the win while Valders was defeated. The Panthers and Dutchmen also haven’t met, although both have defeated Brillion in the regular season.
