WIAA wrestling roundup: Lincoln advances 3 to sectionals


The Manitowoc Lincoln wrestling team’s Jonah Mrozinsky was one of three Ships wrestlers to advance to next weekend’s sectionals as he finished second at 182 pounds at Saturday’s Lincoln-hosted Division 1 regional.

Mrozinsky won his first match by a 10-0 major decision before advancing with a 9-4 decision in his semifinal match. In the first-place match, Mrozinsky fell to Sheboygan North’s Aaron Rothwell by 12-3 major decision. In the second place match, Mrozinsky won by rule.

Also for Lincoln, Marcus Sonnenberg finished third at 285 pounds and Travis Brixius was fourth at 138 pounds.

Sonnenberg, after a first-round bye, fell by 5-1 decision in the semifnal match before winning via pin in the third-place match. Sonnenberg also fell in the second-place match to West Bend West’s Tom Gilbert via 1:09 pin.

After falling in the quarterfinals by 2-0 decision and a second-round bye, Brixius won the fifth-place match by 11-0 major decision and won the fourth-place match by 12-1 major decision.

The Raiders advanced seven wrestlers to sectionals as Ty Pelot (113 pounds) and Scott Skornicka (195) had byes and two wins to earn first-place finishes.

Also for Two Rivers, Paul Bianchi (106), Chris Yauch (132), Cody Rebarchek (152), Brad Dimmick (160) and Bobby Geiger (220) moved on with second-place finishes.

With Bianchi, Yauch, Dimmick and Gieger earning first-round byes, the four won their semifinal matches before falling in the first-place matches. From there, all four won the second-place matches With Geiger and Bianchi winning via pin and Dimmick and Yauch winning via rule.

Rebarchek Won his first match with a pin before falling by 5-0 decision. Rebarchek rebounded to win his next match by 15-7 major decision and won the second-place match with an 8-6 decision.

Valders had six individuals advance to sectionals while Kiel had four and Roncalli added one.

Stetson McCulley won the 138-pound bracket with a first-round bye and two major decisions to advance to sectionals for the Vikings.

Also advancing with second-place finishes for Valders was Alemayehu Lehman (120), Mulugeta Lehman (126), Trevor Wittmus (145), Tanner Duchow (160) and Brandon Brennan (220).

Alemayehu Lehman advanced with a first-round bye and an 8-2 decision before falling via pin in the first-place match. He then won the second-place match by rule.

Mulugeta Lehman first won by 16-1 tech fall before being pinned in his second match. He then won his next two matches via decisions.

Wittmus advanced with a pin and a decision. After falling in his third match via major decision, he won by rule in the second-place match.

Duchow, after a first-round bye, won by decision and then fell by tech fall before winning the second-place match by rule.

For Brennan, he advanced with a bye and a pin before falling by decision. He then won the second-place match by pin.

Kiel also fared well as five of its wrestlers advanced.

Tanner Woepse (113), Jay Wallace (145), Austin Field (182) and Matt Halverson (285) each had first-round byes and went 2-0 to win their weight classes and advance.

The Raiders’ Aaron Field (170) was second to advance as he had a bye and then won by major decision. After falling via major decision, Field won the second-place match with a 49-second pin.

For Roncalli, Stephen Heili finished second at 285 pounds with a bye and pin before Halverson defeated him with a pin. In the second-place match Heili won by rule.

Mishicot had three wrestlers move on to sectionals while Reedsville advanced five.

For the Indians, Luke Finnel (126 pounds) had a bye and won two matches to win his bracket while teammates Weston Cracraft (120) and Boone Young (132) earned second-place finishes.

Cracraft and Young each started with byes, with Cracraft winning his second match with a pin and Young falling via decision. Cracraft fell in the first-place match before winning the second-place match by rule while Young won the third-place match with a major decision and the second-place match with an injury default.

The Panthers’ Andrew Kocourek (182) and Colby Kasten (138) had byes and won two matches to win their brackets.

Grant Wedepohl (152), Elliott Ebert (160) and Tyler Schuh (170) finished second in their weight classes with each starting with a bye. The trio also won their second matches before falling in the first-place matches.

Wedepohl and Schuh won their second-place matches by rule while Ebert won his with a 4-3 decision.
