Sometimes, doing just enough is good enough to pick up a win.
That’s what the Oshkosh West softball team did on Thursday.
The Wildcats scored just three runs on seven hits but held the Appleton West Terrors scoreless to take a 3-0 at Oshkosh West in a Fox Valley Association contest.
In a game where the two teams combined for 11 hits, none of which were extra-base hits, and most of which didn’t make it out of the infield, runs were at a premium. And it was the Wildcats who were able to capitalize.
Oshkosh West would strike in the third inning, getting some help from Appleton West pitcher Tess Verhyen. Both runs in the frame came on wild pitches.
“It was huge,” Oshkosh West coach John Klohn said. “This whole conference is tough. It doesn’t matter who you play, you have to be productive.”
And that would be more than enough for Wildcats pitcher Callie Troutfetter, who was in a groove. Troutfetter struck out nine on the afternoon, scattering four hits in the shutout.
She only allowed four runners to reach second all game as well, keeping any scoring threat by the Terrors at a minimum.
“It’s great knowing that we have someone like her to back us up,” Oshksoh West Chantal Bougie said of Troutfetter. “She pitches the ball where it needs to be and places it well.”
The worst trouble she was in all game came in the final innings, when she put runners on first and second with one out.
But she calmly got a short flyout to center and the struck out Appleton West’s Marissa Marx to end the threat and the game.
“The pressure gets a little higher but all it ends up being is everyone has to know that there are this many outs, here’s where we are going,” Troutfetter said. “We need to bear down. We need to end this game. We need to stay on top.”
The defense behind her was also solid, as the Wildcats committed just one error and made solid play after solid play behind her.
Troutfetter provided some offense of her own, driving in Bougie in the fifth inning to provide Oshkosh West with some insurance.
Bougie went 2-for-3 in the win for West, scoring two of the three Wildcats runs. Troutfetter also finished 2-for-3 with the lone RBI of the game.
The win moves Oshkosh West to 4-1 on the season and with three more games coming up to end this week, that start could be come even better.
And if the Wildcats, who have high aspirations, want to achieve big things this year, it will be because they got it going early.
“If we can get through this week pretty solid, we’ll be in a good way,” Klohn said. “For us to be productive and for us to go where we want to be they just have to keep getting better.”
