Oshkosh West has picked the right time to get hot.
The Wildcats got a complete game from Jake Guenther and had five different players drive in runs in a 5-3 win over Watertown in a WIAA Division 1 regional final on Thursday.
“We’ve said from the beginning that it’s not necessarily how are you start but how you finish,” West coach Tony Gerharz said. “We’re getting some breaks, getting some good pitching and getting some nice defensive plays. … When you put it all together we can play with anybody.”
The Wildcats, who have won three straight games, will turn their attention to top-seeded Sun Prairie in a sectional semifinal at Oconomowoc on Tuesday at 10 a.m. The winner of that game will play at 4 p.m. with a chance to go to state.
Watertown scored in the first inning, but it was a short-lived lead and the only one for the Goslings.
Kyler Crooks doubled home courtesy runner Connor Knaus in the second to tie the score and then Guenther scored on Drew Connors’ double in third to give West the lead.
The Wildcats extended their advantage in the fifth on a solo home run by Damian Guenther.
“We got some nice clutch hits,” Gerharz said.
In the sixth, Jordan Mueller’s squeeze bunt brought in a run and Steve Wolf followed with an RBI single that gave West a 5-1 lead.
Watertown, the fourth-seed rallied in the bottom of the seventh and had the bases loaded with two outs when Jake Guenther, who struck out seven in the game, got the final out on a groundout.
Crooks finished 2-for-2 as West only totaled five hits in the game.
