Wildcats top Piners, clinch B South title

The visiting Pinelands Regional softball team clinched the Shore Conference Class B South title with a 21-1 win over Lakewood on Monday.

Emma Neuweiler led the Wildcats (15-1, 11-1), allowing one earned run in four innings and lashing two hits in five at-bats, scoring three runs and drawing one walk. Neuweiler struck out 10, walked none and surrendered three hits.

Corinne Huber went 2-for-5, scored three runs, reached on an error and plated two runs. Linsday McClellon went 2-for-4, scored one run, drove in three runs and drew one walk against the Piners (1-14, 0-13).

Pinelands opened a 6-0 lead in the first inning. With none out, Naomi Stas hit an RBI single and Huber boomed a two-run triple for a 3-0 lead. Shannyn Herron lofted a sacrifice fly to make it 5-0. The fourth and sixth runs scored on errors.

TR EAST 10, LACEY 0: The host Raiders (15-3, 12-1) clinched at least a tie for their seventh straight Class A South title, downing Lacey (6-10, 6-7).

The Raiders can win the championship outright with a victory over Southern on Wednesday. Jordan Weed (15-3) went 4-for-4 and drove in one run. Val Hirschfeld went 2-for-4 and plated four runs.

SJ VIANNEY 4, MANASQUAN 1: Lefty Kate Beriont tossed a five-hitter to lead the visiting Lancers (16-1, 13-0) past the Warriors (10-7, 7-5) in Class A Central.

Beriont struck out eight, walked none and allowed one earned run. St. John Vianney snapped a 1-1 tie with three runs in the sixth. The first run scored on a wild pitch. Jackie Gallagher’s two-run two-out single to right-center on a 3-2 pitch made it 4-1.

Gallagher and teammate Erica Krumbine each went 2-for-4. Manasquan’s Quinn Salto went 2-for-3.

Manasquan took a 1-0 lead in the second on a suicide squeeze by Katie Barnes with one out on a 1-1 pitch. Cate Marotta dashed home.

JACKSON LIB. 6, POINT BORO 5: Lexi Schiazza, whose team survived a triple play by the Panthers (2-14, 2-10), plated the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th to lead the Lions (11-6, 9-3) to a Class B South win.

Schiazza singled to left field with two out for a 5-4 lead. Winning pitcher Any Hickman followed with an RBI triple to left-center. Hickman, who went the distance, allowed five earned runs, struck out four, walked none and yielded 10 hits.

Teaming for a triple play with Point Boro ahead 4-0 in the fifth were center fielder Emily Liakakos, catcher Melissa Alfonso and first baseman Mary McKeon.

Jackson Liberty’s Amy Hickman went 3-for-5 and drove in one run. Teammate April Szymczyk went 2-for-3, drove in one run and scored one. For the Panthers, Melissa Alfonso went 4-for-5 and scored two runs.

MONS. DONOVAN 17, MANCHESTER 6: Jennifer Rivers went 4-for-5, drove in five runs, scored three and was hit by a pitch for the visiting Griffins (9-6, 8-4) in their win over the Hawks (5-9, 5-8) in Class B South.

Donovan’s Kaylee Hoeler went 3-for-5, plated six runs, scored three and was hit by a pitch. Teammate Courtney Tylutki went 4-for-5, drove in one run and scored two. The Griffins’ Becky Drake, who went 1-for-5, scored five runs, drew two walks and was hit by a pitch.

Manchester’s Kendall Kiernan went 3-for-4 and drove in four runs.

MATAWAN 7, HOLMDEL 3: Eruptingfor five runs in the top of the sixth, the Huskies (7-10) rallied for a non-divisional win over the Hornets (5-12).

Amanda Lloyd’s two-run double sent the Huskies in front to stay, 4-3. Hadassah Curry followed with an RBI single and Dalila Radoncic delivered a run with a two-out fielder’s choice to key the rally.

For Matawan, Sarah Berardo went 3-for-4 and scored one run and Sam Buchman and Danielle Knox each went 2-for-3. Knox (5-4) also went the distance, striking out three, walking five and tossing a four-hitter.

CENTRAL 6, BARNEGAT 0: Sophomore right-hander Stephanie Pepper (11-4) tossed a four-hitter, leading the host Golden Eagles (11-4, 10-3) past the Bengals (7-12, 4-7) in Class B South.

Pepper struck out four and walked one. Vicky Nucci hit a three-run double in the sixth for a 6-0 lead. Samantha Farreau went 2-for-2, plated a second-inning run with an RBI single for a 2-0 lead and scored one run. Pepper delivered a first-inning run with an RBI ground out. On defense, Central left fielder Kaitlyn Diou threw out a runner at home in the third inning to keep the Golden Eagles ahead 2-0.

JACKSON MEM. 10, SOUTHERN 1: Sarah Freyre went 4-for-4, including two RBI doubles, powering the host Jaguars (10-5, 9-4) past the Rams (2-414, 1-12) in Class A South.

Freyre hit RBI doubles in the first and fourth as the Jaguars opened a 5-0 lead. Sydney Calderon laced two hits in four at-bats and plated four runs. Morgan Noak, who went 2-for-4, hit an RBI single and stole one base.

Southern’s Bailey Doyle hit two singles in three at-bats.

KEYPORT 19, ASBURY PARK 1: Junior right-hander Jill Trigg pitched a four-inning one-hitter as the visiting Red Raiders (8-6, 7-6) bested the Blue Bishops (0-14, 0-13) in Class B Central.

Trigg struck out one, walked three and allowed one earned run. Junior third baseman Danielle Piccini slugged her team-leading sixth homer of the year in the third. Piccini connected for two runs to key a 13-run outburst as the Red Raiders went ahead, 16-0. Piccini, who went 2-for-3, scored two runs.

ST. ROSE 16, RANNEY SCHOOL 0: Brianna McInerney pitched a four-inning no-hitter and Sara Case went 3-for-4 and drove in one run to lead the Purple Roses (9-7, 9-4) past the Panthers in Class B Central.

McInerney struck out 10 and walked seven.

MATER DEI 7, HENRY HUDSON 2: Winner Jackie Nash (12-1) hit a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth to help the Seraphs (14-1, 13-0) to a Class B Central win over the Admirals (8-8, 8-6).

Nash capped a five-run explosion, staking the Seraphs to a 7-2 lead. Audriana Miller hit an RBI single and Maggie Klatt scored on an error, setting the stage for Nash.

MARLBORO 25, FREEHOLD 7: Samantha Sentelli clouted a grand slam and went 4-for-6 and drove in five runs and Samantha Brinkskelle went 5-for-6 and plated four as the visiting Mustangs (10-10) downed the Colonials (4-11) in non-divisional play.

POINT BEACH 12, KEANSBURG 1: Kaitie Sherbo scattered three hits, struck out six, walked one and allowed one earned run as the visiting Garnet Gulls (11-4, 10-3) bested the Titans (3-10, 3-10) in Class B Central.

Sarah Scott and Eva Motto each added homers. Scott led off the second with a homer to right-center for a 1-0 lead. Motto slugged a two-out, two-run shot to left in the third to push the lead to 4-0. Teammate Kellyann Ohlinger went 4-for-5 and drove in one run.

RED BANK 4, SHORE 0: Kate Cerkus’ four-hitter and three RBI paced the visiting Bucs (10-5) past the Blue Devils (1-14) in non-divisional play.

Cerkus struck out seven and walked two. Her two-run two-out double down the left-field line in the first put the Bucs in front, 2-0. An RBI single in the sixth with none out extended the lead to 3-0. The final run scored in the sixth on an error.

BRICK MEM. 9, TR SOUTH 1: Jess Angersbach drove in three runs, scored one and went 2-for-4, leading the visiting Mustangs (7-10, 8-5) past the Indians (12-8, 7-6) in Class A South.

Sierra Culldo went 3-for-4 and plated three runs. Winner Jessica Borman struck out six, walked three and allowed one earned run on seven hits. South’s Pat Gantner went 3-for-4 and scored one run.
