TONAWANDA, N.Y.-Williamsville North beat Grand Island 14-7 in overtime Friday evening. The Spartans make their first trip in school history to Ralph Wilson Stadium to play in the Section 6 championship game next weekend.
Grand Island opened the scoring in the first quarter when Jarod Brandon ran for a 50 yard touchdown. No one scored again until North tied the game with 39 seconds remaining. Ryan Majewski connected with Chad Steinwachs for a seven yard touchdown to complete a 14 play 70 yard drive. Grand Island had a chance to win it in regulation but Nick Aimes blocked a field goal with one second remaining to force overtime.
Majewski was 13 for 23 passing for 123 yards and the one touchdown. Derick Isler had 23 carries for 90 yards and his scored the winning touchdown in the second overtime.
With the win the Spartans make school history. They will make their first ever Ralph Wilson Stadium appearance when they play next Friday night in the Section 6 Class A championship game. North finishes 5-3. Head coach Mike Mammoliti told Two On Your Side’s Jonah Javad “they never gave up. It was really close. And that final drive showed that they persevered. They’ve been doing that all season. Hanging in there tough.”
North will play the winner of the Sweet Home West Seneca East game for the Section 6 championship.
