ORCHARD PARK, N.Y.- Conference realignment has hit Depew for 2013. This year, Brian Wilson’s squad has moved to the South-B division. Depew will now join its long time rival Alden as conference foes.
“The only familiar face will be our old friends at Alden so with all new teams in the division we don’t know what we’re getting into so we’ll give it our best shot,” Wilson told Two on Your Side’s Stu Boyar at the Lions Ad-Pro All Star game.
Even with the new mix of opponents, Wilson says he’s just excited to get the season underway. “We’re in the South now so we’re in with Dunkirk and Eden, East Aurora, Holland, Pioneer, Springville, Olean, Alden. We don’t play Pioneer because we drew them but other than that we’re playing everybody else. We open down in Olean on Saturday night so it will be fun,” Wilson said.
Although the rivalry matchup is a game coaches have their eyes on, Depew Head Coach, Brian Wilson, explains he’ll worry about it when the time comes. “In recent history, they’ve had our number so we’ve probably got a little asterisk next to next to that one on the schedule. But that’s week five I think so we’ll worry about the first four,” Wilson explained.
With the number of starters Depew returned, Coach Wilson explained his confidence in the team this year. “We returned quite a few kids, depending on the offensive sets we’ll return up to eight starters on the offense and five to six starters on defense. We use a lot of personnel groupings so we should have some experience coming back so we’re expecting to be competitive,” said Wilson.
So far, those starters haven’t given the edge to one side of the ball over the other. Rather, Brian Wilson sees an even strength between both the offense and defense right now. “I’m hoping we’re equally experienced on both sides of the ball and be able to take advantage of those things, you know be able to execute what we want,” Wilson pointed out.
Depew’s first season in the South-B conference kicks off on September 7th. The Wildcats start on the road at Olean.
