The Arlington High School wrestling team advanced to the semifinals of the Section 1 Dual Meet Championship with a 51-24 victory over host John Jay on Thursday.
Key wins for Arlington came from Alfredo Olmedo (106 pounds), Adam Ortiz (138), Mike Chirasello (145) and Brandon Badger (170).
“It really was a team effort,” Arlington coach Fred Perry said. “We were very aggressive. I think the two warmup matches we had Wednesday helped us a lot because those were our first matches of the season. I liked the way we went right at them. They were a very tough team and it went in our favor. If John Jay had any holes in their lineup, when we see them again, they will have those holes plugged.”
Arlington will face another semifinalist at North Rockland High School on Tuesday. The tournament reseeds after the quarterfinal round.
For John Jay, Brett Perry defeated Jon Silveri at 182, and at 120, Jay Albis picked up a 6-0 decision over Brady Robin, who bumped up from 113 for the match. Ron McCabe (152) and Dominic Testa (126) also picked up wins for John Jay.
Arlington’s coach said he’d have preferred to not face his league foe so early in the season.
“I didn’t like it!” Fred Perry said with a laugh. “I’d rather see them later on. We see them so much and in other tournaments. It’s always exciting with them. (John Jay coach) Jamie (Weaver) does a nice job with them.”
