Jay Albis wanted to make a statement. In the process, he led his John Jay High School wrestling team to a 48-28 victory over visiting Arlington on Thursday.
Moving up from 106 pounds to 113, Albis pinned Travis Becker in 3:06 in the first match of the meet.
“This is what (Albis) wanted,” Patriots coach Jamie Weaver said. “He told me he was going to go out and send a statement that he’s back at 113. … I told him, if you are going to make a statement, you have to pin this kid. And he did.
“Jay just set the tone. Everything after that was just great.”
John Jay won the next four matches as well, and nine in all. Luke Minasi (132 pounds), Brandon White (170) and Brett Perry (182) also earned Patriots wins via pin, while Paul Bernasconi (120) won by technical fall, Dale White (160) won by major decision, Ron McCabe (138) won by decision, and Grant Frederick (126) and Eric Wakefield (195) each received forfeits.
Dale White returned from a season-long back injury last week. However, Weaver said the senior’s lofty goals remain intact.
“He’s even more hungry for a state championship than he was before,” the coach said.
For Arlington, Mario Zeppetelli (145) and Tanner Nielson (220) each won by pin, Brady Robin (99) won by 9-0 decision, and Nick Jimenez (106) and Brandon Badger (152) won by forfeit.
