YORKTOWN — Yorktown’s Chandler Carroll was announced as a national finalist for the Wendy’s High School Heisman during a special ceremony held Monday morning in the Yorktown High School gymnasium.
Carroll, a senior football player who just finished the season with 2,529 rushing yards, also carries a 4.083 GPA. The award honors athletes for their achievements in athletics, academics and community service. He was announced last week as the male winner for the state of Indiana.
Monday’s ceremony began by recognizing him for his statewide achievement, before it was revealed to his surprise that he was a national finalist as well. The honor had been a well-guarded secret leading up to the ceremony. The school’s student body was gathered in the gym for the event, with the cheerleaders and band performing in the background.
“I honestly had no idea about going to New York City,” Carroll said. “It kind of makes my morning, honestly.”
He is one of six male national finalists, and Carroll will travel to New York City for the awards ceremony, to be held the same weekend as the college football Heisman honoree is announced.
