MOORESVILLE, N.C. — Mooresville high school senior running back Akease Rankin is racking up a lot of personal accolades this year. The Blue Devils’ star has been selected to the Shrine Bowl under his head coach Hal Capps, and recently committed to UNC-Charlotte to play football. I met with the Mooresville talent at practice for the second edition of 10 Questions.

1. You just committed to UNC-Charlotte. Has that helped eliminate some of the distraction that comes with the recruiting process?

“Yes. It takes a lot of the focus on worrying about where I need to go away, and now I can focus on helping my team, and helping us get as far as we need to go.”

2. How important is it to beat cross-town rival Lake Norman?

“To be real honest with you, we’re just focused on South [Iredell]. When it comes to Lake Norman, we will treat them as important as they are when that week comes. Right now we’re focused on getting the victory this week.”

3. Who’s been the biggest influence on your football career?

“It’s been Adrian Peterson. When I first started playing football, which was freshman year, that was who I wanted to be like. I still want to be like him, despite what’s happened off the field, I want to be like Adrian on the field.”

4. Who’s your favorite NFL player?

“Adrian Peterson.”

5. If you could meet any celebrity past or present who would it be?

“Walter Payton.”

6. I can’t really ask an athlete Pepsi or Coke, so do you prefer Gatorade or Powerade?

“Gatorade (laughing).”

7. Where do you see yourself when you’re done playing football?

“When I go to college I’m going to pick up a business major. If anything, I’d like to be a part of the business side of the NFL, such as marketing, advertising, being an agent, or even owning a franchise.”

8. If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go?

“That’s a good question. Canton, Ohio. (home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame)”

9. When it’s just you and you have your headphones in before a game, what kind of music are you listening to?

“I’m listening to a lot of high-energy, pump-up hip hop.”

10. What’s your favorite NFL team?

“Carolina, it’s where I’m from.”

Akease and the rest of the Mooresville squad will visit South Iredell on Friday. The Blue Devils are currently 9-0 and are in first place in the North Piedmont Conference.
