We take a look at the athletes who proudly wear the #13 on the field around the 757. Today we spoke to Kellam field hockey's #13 Sophia Kottmer
VIRGINIA BEACH — #13 Sophia Kottmer is starting her third season as a midfielder for the Kellam Knights field hockey team.
The first in her family to play the sport Kottmer plans to go all the way, looking at colleges such as Liberty University as well as William and Mary to bring her field hockey talents to, though at this point she is still looking around at different schools.
With a deep passion for the sport Sophia has spent the summer preparing for her junior year. “I play club field hockey year round. I also play both indoor and outdoor. I just do everything when I’m not playing high school.” There is never really an off season for the 16-year-old.
As for a successful upcoming season #13 says that communication is key on the field. “I feel that we need to talk a lot more and play as a unit instead of individually.”
Looking back, the game against Cox High School was the junior’s favorite game last year due the score being so close. “It’s always back and forth. They score then we score so it’s usually a good game.” The match between Kellam and First Colonial should be a tough game this year. Kottmer says that First Colonial’s passing game makes them great competition.
The Knights took on the Granby Comets at home during the final scrimmage before their season officially starts Tuesday against the Bishop Sullivan Crusaders.
