PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Position: Setter/Outside hitter
Vital stats: An all-around threat, Sher led her Spartans to their first Section 9 Class B title and the state semifinals with 348 assists, 200 kills and 87 aces in 24 matches. Sher provided 20 kills, 18 assists and seven aces in the state regional finals against Dobbs Ferry, and coach Cassi Diamond said Sher even helped fill in on coaching duties in Diamond’s absence that match.
Quotable: “She stepped up and kind of took that role on, as well as playing the game,” Diamond said. “It’s very serious to Nur. She leads by example and she also leads with her voice, as well. She does exactly as she tells the other girls to do.”
•“Nur’s a setter. Nur can hit middle. Nur can hit outside. Nur plays defense,” Rhinebeck coach Bill Doyle said. “They’re not doing what they did without her. There’s nobody around here that attacks on the right side like she does.”
School: John Jay
Position: Outside hitter
Vital stats: Taking over the role as John Jay’s leader a year after helping the team win the Section 1 Class AA title a year ago, Barberan finished with 149 kills and 154 digs in 18 matches.
Quotable: “She was probably the rock of our team,” John Jay coach Maria Mahoney said. “She got to shine this year. … The things Maddie does, there’s no statistics for it. We don’t play well without Maddie at all.”
Vital stats: The Blazers’ longtime orchestrator finished with 593 assists, 253 digs, 150 kills and 112 aces in helping Millbrook reach the Section 9 Class B final.
Quotable: “What she can do on the court is just not seen anywhere else in the area,” Millbrook coach Shawn Stoliker said. “She is so smart and can do things in a split-second’s time that I have never seen from any other player in my coaching career.”
Vital stats: Stepping in at setter for the first time in her career after Brooke Vahos suffered an injury on the first day of preseason, Etta directed the Blue Devils to the state Class D final with 448 assists, 156 kills, 126 digs and 66 aces.
Quotable: “Nicole, who’s been a hitter her whole career, was kind of thrown in the fire,” Haldane coach Melissa Rossano said. “Without her, I don’t know how far we would have gotten.”
School: Our Lady of Lourdes
Position: Outside hitter
Vital stats: Garnot capped her career by being named Player of the Year in Section 1 Conference I League A, with 290 kills, 172 digs, 40 blocks, 51 aces and 19 assists.
Quotable: “She played every single position this year,” Lourdes coach Emily Krieger said. “She’s become a very powerful hitter for us. In the past two years, she’s become a more intelligent, adaptable player.”
Position: Outside hitter
Vital stats: A steadying force for the Spartans, McKee finished with 201 kills, including 20 in the state regional finals against Dobbs Ferry, and 44 aces.
Quotable: “Bri kind of just did it, and people followed her for that,” Spackenkill coach Cassi Diamond said. “She’s a consistent player. She didn’t make a lot of mistakes.”
Vital stats: The most dominating offensive force in the area, Vahos totaled 499 kills this year for 1,208 in her career, with the final 43 coming in a five-set loss to Portville in the state finals. She also had 216 digs, 64 blocks and 24 assists this season.
Quotable: “This year I think she was more of a leader,” Rossano said. “It wasn’t necessarily a numbers change this year but a personality change. She went from a follower to a leader on the court. … She definitely has the team in mind when she’s playing.”
COACH OF THE YEAR
Vital stats: It wasn’t just that Rossano led the Blue Devils to a 12th consecutive Section 1 Class D title and the state title match, it was that she did it after losing setter Brooke Vahos to a broken leg on the opening day of preseason, and gave birth during the state playoffs and still managed to coach on final four weekend.
Quotable: “She only had nine player all season,” John Jay coach Maria Mahoney said. “She does a lot with a little over there.”
•“What she does year-in and year-out with that team is nothing short of amazing,” Millbrook coach Shawn Stoliker said.
