The 33rd District is always one of the most hotly contested in Northern Kentucky boys’ basketball.
This year looks to be no exception. None of the teams within the district have stood out from the others over the first few weeks of the season. Cooper is 3-2, Boone County is 3-2 and Conner is 3-2. Ryle lags behind at 1-4, but the young Raiders have lost their last two games by a combined three points.
This week’s slate of local games, featuring a few key 33rd district matchups, will reveal a lot more about these teams and provide an opportunity for them to make a statement.
The action starts on a loaded Tuesday night schedule that will see Ryle travel to Cooper for the Battle of Union, Boone County will head to Newport to take on Northern Kentucky’s top team, Newport Central Catholic (2-0) and Conner will play at Simon Kenton (3-2).
Other big Tuesday night matchups include Campbell County (5-0) hosting Newport (4-1) in a game that will feature three of Northern Kentucky’s top players in Newport junior guard Ethan Snapp, Campbell County senior Dre Jackson and the Camels’ junior center, Matt Wilson.
Also, Dixie Heights (2-3) is hosting Highlands (0-1), Scott (3-3) will head down the hill to take on Holy Cross (4-2) and Grant County (4-2) will hit the road to take on undefeated Oldham County (6-0).
One of the most intriguing games of the week will take place on Wednesday night when last year’s 10th Region champion Campbell County heads to Park Hills to take on the reigning Ninth Region and state champs, Covington Catholic (3-1).
In addition to Jackson and Wilson for Campbell County, the Colonels have two of the area’s top players in sophomore guard Cole VonHandorf and senior forward Bo Schuh.
Two more 33rd district rivalry match-ups headline Friday night’s schedule with Cooper playing at Boone County and Ryle hosting Conner.
