4 Kromer finals set for today

Three champions were crowned Saturday in the Sam Kromer Flight Doubles tournament, while the other four flights played through the semifinals at Sanborn Park and the Port Huron Tennis House.

The women’s first and second flights wrapped up Saturday, as did the men’s second flight. Finals in other flights are today starting at 9 a.m.

Jen Douglas and Kate Khan won the women’s first flight, defeating Mary Fajardo and Kathy McCabe 6-3, 7-5 in the final. Douglas and Khan won their semifinal match 6-0, 6-0 against Kristen Pillon and Kelly Shaw. Fajardo and McCabe defeated Katrina Marshall and Jackie Kirovac 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 in their semifinal.

Margaret Smith and Elise McInnis defeated Jillian Brooks and Sydney Sepsey 6-2, 6-4 Thursday night in the finals of the women’s second flight. Smith and McInnis defeated Murphy Vandervest and Sydney Westfalll 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 in the semifinals, while Brooks and Sepsey defeated Jamy Brooks and Isabella Flann 6-2, 6-3 in the other semifinal.

The men’s second flight was won by Greg Gale and Bob Randolph. They defeated Tom Kosztowny and Vic Amato 6-3, 6-1 in the finals. They knocked off Burt Brooks and Todd Kinney 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals. Kosztowny and Amato defeated Joseph Raymond and Donovan Sharrow 6-2, 6-2 in the other semifinal.

The finals of the women’s championship flight will feature a state championship high school doubles team squaring off against two of the area’s top singles players. Maggie Bacheller and Amy Tseng, who won the No. 2 doubles state title for Port Huron Northern in Division 1, face St. Clair’s Danielle Slonac and Claire Brooks.

Bacheller and Tseng defeated Grace Whitney and Breana Knust 6-4, 6-1 in their semifinal, while Brooks and Slonac defeated their high school teammates Ally Kennedy and Ally Winkler 6-3, 6-1.

Steve Pillon and Luke Ingles advanced to the finals of the men’s championship flight with a 6-1, 6-0 win against Michael Coleman and Brian Slonac. They’ll play reigning two-time Times Herald Boys Tennis Player of the Year Franklin Brozovich and his All-Blue Water Area teammate Connor Johnston in the final after Brozovich and Johnston defeated Tim Gaul and Will Gaul 7-5, 6-4.

Geoff Bore and Jeff Blackman defeated Pat McGrath and Andrew McGrath 6-2, 6-7, 6-1 in the semifinals of the men’s first flight. They’ll play Terry Curley and Collin Lilley who defeated Frank Palazzolo and John Rose 6-4, 6-4 in the other semifinal.

In the men’s third flight, Jaxon Bore and Derek Distelrath defeated Ben Morgulec and Tyler Sweppy 6-0, 6-2 to advance to the final. Quinn Schwarz and Chris Latosinsky defeated Ryan Davies and Chandler Haagsma 6-4, 6-3 to earn the other spot in the final.
