Saturday produced four state champions from Western North Carolina.

And they are each represented with the latest Citizen-Times/WNC Fall Sports Athlete of the Week awards.

Hendersonville senior Cassie Born was named the most valuable player of the NCHSAA 2-A volleyball championship match for a second consecutive season as she guided the Bearcats to a 3-0 sweep of South Granville in Raleigh.

Born, who has committed to play in college for Tusculum (Tenn.), had 13 kills and 12 digs.

Meanwhile, there were three individual champs who emerged from the NCHSAA cross country meets in Kernersville – Reynolds junior Anna Vess (3-A girls), East Henderson senior Tanis Baldwin (3-A boys) and Mitchell senior Zach Boone (1-A boys).

Thank you to everyone who has previously taken part in the nomination process this fall. Next week will be the final award given out unless Franklin or Reynolds are able to advance to a NCHSAA soccer championship game.
