4A Southwestern Conference week seven football preview

The Southwestern Conference will enter its second week of conference play this week, and there’s three matchups on the slate. All three games will take place Thursday night, so many Southwestern fans will be watching with a close eye what happens in the state on Friday.

So far, Independence has been sensational, and Butler got back on track after a tough loss to Richmond. Garinger has struggled as many expected, Rocky River has won four-straight after a ‘rocky’ start, and Myers Park’s 2-4 looks more impressive on the field than on paper.

Teams on bye: Myers Park (2-4)

Porter Ridge (0-5) at Independence (6-0)

Porter Ridge limps into their game at Independence with some serious issues on offense. The Pirates have only scored 70 points all season, and 33 of those came in a loss to Piedmont. Zach Bevilacqua’s team has been outscored 93-19 in their last three games. Independence notched another shutout last week in a 38-0 drubbing at East Mecklenburg. The Patriots have shutout five opponents, and the offense is firing on all cylinders. Even without star quarterback Kelvin Hopkins, Joe Evans’ team never had any doubts against the overmatched Eagles. Unless something drastic happens, it doesn’t appear as though the Pirates can hang with the Pats.

USA TODAY High School Sports Predictor: Independence 38, Porter Ridge 7

Rocky River (4-2) at Garinger (0-4)

Rocky River picked up their fourth straight win last week, pulling out a 28-14 victory against Myers Park. The Ravens are led by superstar Jaire Alexander and senior tailback Elijah Jett. Jett currently leads the Southwestern Conference with 673 rushing yards and Alexander has 624 receiving yards. Alexander is also tied for the lead with two interceptions. The Garinger Wildcats have been outclassed in four games this year, being outscored a combined 192-34. Last week was the low-water mark for the Wildcats, when Butler handed the Cats a 66-0 beating. Garinger’s defense has been demoralized this year, and the talent at Rocky River should have no problems putting points up in this contest.

USA TODAY High School Sports Predictor: Rocky River 43, Garinger 0

Butler (5-1) at East Mecklenburg (1-5)

In what may be the most lopsided game of the night, Butler will visit East Meck. The Bulldogs rebounded from their loss to Richmond with a 66-0 beating of Garinger. Anthony Ratliff-Williams was sensational in the game, and he will look to lead the Bulldogs to another big win. The Bulldogs’ offense has been strong this season, scoring at least 28 points in every game. Aside from a 58-point showing against Harding, East Meck has only scored more than 8 points once this season. The Eagles’ offense has been grounded, and last week’s 38-0 shutout against Independence was just the latest example of a struggling team. The Bulldogs are just too good to let a team like East Meck pull the upset.

USA TODAY High School Sports Predictor: Butler 49, East Meck 7
