A community quickly responds to family's tragic loss

STANDISH, Maine (NEWS CENTER ) – A day after a young family seemingly lost it all, friends, neighbors, and even strangers showed just what a community can do in 24 hours.

Bonny Eagle High School studens Joe Bissonnette, Austin Lilly, and Deven Thistlewood started a charity fund for the losses of their friends the Reynolds family.

The father, Peter Reynolds, and his girlfriend, Cherri Demelle, died in a car accident on Saturday. Their son Zachary was driving a van on route 117 in Hollis, when he collided with an oncoming car due to slippery road conditions. Zachary suffered a concussion and a broken leg.

The fund for the family was to off-set approximately $10,000 in funeral costs. In the first 24 hours alone, more than $14,000 was raised. Now the rest of the money is going toward Zachary’s medical bills and other future expenses.

Here are the links to donate online to the Reynolds Family Fund or a fund set up for the DeMelle Family.

To donate in person, a donation table will be set up for Tuesday night’s boys basketball game between Portland and Bonny Eagle at St. Joseph’s College.
