Nine boys’ swimming teams converged at Lakeview High School on Saturday afternoon for the eighth annual Spartan Invitational.

The meet was supposed to be a fast one, featuring many of the state’s top teams, and it didn’t disappoint. In every event, there were at least three state qualifying times.

Lakeview head coach Kyle Lott said he’s always excited to be able to host such great competition.

“It’s awesome. This is the reason we built this nice facility — to bring in some of the best competition in the state,” Lott said.

“This is a classic meet and we’re really having fun with it. Every year we look forward to it.”

The Spartans finished fourth in the event with 271.5 points. Finishing first in the event was Birmingham Seaholm (514), followed by Ann Arbor Skyline (328) and Dexter (275).

When all was said and done, 10 state-meet qualifying times were posted by Lakeview swimmers.

In the 100-yard butterfly, Lakeview junior John Vann finished first with a state-qualifying time of 51.99. Last spring, as a sophomore, Vann won the MHSAA Division 2 state championship in the event. Also posting a state-qualifying time in the event for the Spartans was Adam Waltman at 55.80.

The next event was the 100-yard freestyle, where Lakeview’s Scott Carstens placed third with a time of 49.10. In sixth place in the same event was AJ Cariuty (49.89). Both Carstens’ and Cariuty’s times were ahead of the state-qualifying mark.

The Spartans had three state-qualifying times in the 100-yard backstroke. Finishing first was Carstens in 53.47. Then, placing sixth and seventh, respectively, were Tabor Smyth (56.46) and Sam Myers (57.40).

The 400-yard freestyle relay, the final event of the afternoon, was a close race between the squads from Lakeview and Birmingham Seaholm. The Spartan team made up of Carstons, Cariuty, Vann, and Myers ended up finishing second by less than one second behind the swimmers from Seaholm at 3:16.25.

“We came into this meet really trying to swim fast,” said Lott. “We accomplished a lot of what we were trying to do. There were a lot of new state-qualifying times by kids who had never done it before.”

Other state-qualifying times for Lakeview were Vann in the 200-yard individual medley (1:59.64), Cariuty in the 50-yard freestyle (22.71), and the 200-yard medley relay team. The relay team consisted of Smyth, Myers, Waltman and Gavin Marlowe, and finished seventh with a time of 1:44.80.
