Two Lee County high schools are making changes at the top spot in their athletic departments.
Liam Farrell will start as the athletic director at Cypress Lake High School on Tuesday. Farrell, a 1996 graduate of the school, has spent the past two years in the same position at Island Coast.
“That’s really the only job I’d leave for,” Farrell said. “One big reason is location, I live about two miles from the school.”
Another is the opportunity for Farrell to work alongside his father. Pat, a social studies teacher at Cypress Lake who spent nearly two decades leading one of the area’s best girls soccer programs at the school before retiring from coaching in 2008. A third is the chance to help return the Panthers’ athletic program to the success it enjoyed during Farrell’s days as a student.
“A lot of people my age who graduated from there remember it as a place where we won championships,” he said. “It’s a great challenge to try and get back to that, one that I’m emotionally connected to.”
Island Coast will welcome longtime Fort Myers girls cross country and track coach Kelly Heinzman-Britton as its athletic director. A business teacher at Fort Myers, said she will move into her new position in mid-January.
“I always wanted to get into more an administrative role and I thought this would be a good opportunity to start that next journey in my life,” she said.
Heinzman-Britton, the 2013 All-Area Girls Track Coach of the Year who led the Green Wave girls to second place at the Class 3A state meet last month, said it was a difficult decision to give up full-time coaching.
“But I feel like I’m still going to be coaching and guiding athletes at Island Coast,” she said.
