TAYLORSVILLE, N.C. — Alexander Central boys basketball earned its first win of the season Tuesday, defeating St. Stephens High School 59-42.
The Cougars wasted no time getting going, racing out to an 18-8 lead following the first quarter. St. Stephens refused to let the Cougars get farther away in the second quarter, playing to a 34-23 score at the half. Shooting percentage was definitely a telling stat in the first half, with Alexander Central shooting 57.1% compared to St. Stephens’ 30.4%.
Alexander Central started the second half much like the first, outscoring the Indians 14-6, extending their lead to 48-29. In the fourth quarter, the Cougars led by as many as 21 points before St. Stephens closed to 17 points to finish the game. Alexander Central was led by Ty Ireland’s 17 points. Noah Presnell led the Cougars with two blocks in the game. St. Stephens had three players reach double figures, led by Marcus Conner’s 14 points. Alex Ijames had a good night as well, achieving a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds in the loss.
Alexander Central has the rest of the week off before hosting Davie County on December 1.
