All-Space Coast Girls Cross Country: Wollrath sets pace

Holy Trinity’s Julie Wollrath captured her third consecutive individual Class 1A cross country title and helped lead a loaded Tigers squad to a team championship in November.

Pretty decent qualifications, right?

For her dominant performance throughout the cross country season, Wollrath is FLORIDA TODAY’s 2013 Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year. It is her third such honor.

Wollrath has had some fantastic individual performances while at Holy Trinity, most recently an 18:14 time for 5,000 meters at the FHSAA Class 1A championship in Tallahassee that saw her outdistance the next closest competitor by nearly eight seconds.

She also was the district and regional champion.

Despite Wollrath’s natural talent, she’s quick to give much of the credit to a talented Holy Trinity team that featured many of the top runners in the county.

“I think it really helps that we’re all in it together,” Wollrath said. “We all work really hard. I think that helps.”

She’s also quick to praise her coach, Doug Butler, for her individual and the team’s success.

“He knows exactly what he’s doing,” added Wollrath.

Though she’s had a lot of help, Wollrath knew relatively early that she had an opportunity to be successful in cross country.

“In like sixth grade, I was part of a team at Covenant Christian and I did this race, and I ended up doing really well and I realized I could be good at this,” she said.

What’s more is that Wollrath, a junior, isn’t done with winning on the high school level yet, as she’ll try to become a four-time state champion next year.

“There’s a lot of pressure but, yeah, it’s crazy,” added Wollrath.
