Brady Aiken of Cathedral Catholic (San Diego) and Tyler Kolek of Shepherd, Texas, have a chance to be the first high school pitchers in 23 years to go No. 1 in the Major League June Amateur Draft. The left-handed Aiken has signed with UCLA, but through 43.2 innings this seasonhe has 80 strikeouts, a 6-0 record, an 0.80 earned-run average and allowed only seven walks. Kolek, who has signed with Texas Christian, has 124 strikeouts in 60.1 innings with only eight walks.
Aiken and Kolek lead the 20-player American Family Insurance ALL-USA baseball finalists list. Ten players, including a Player of the Year, will be chosen for the ALL-USA first team in mid-June.
Last season, seven of the 10 players selected for the ALL-USA first team went in the first round of the draft. Only one of this year’s finalists made the ALL-USA first team last year, pitcher-third baseman Jack Flaherty of Harvard-Westlake (Studio City).
