Former South Plainfield High School wrestling star Anthony Ashnault — New Jersey’s only four-time undefeated state champion — was inducted into the Atlantic City Boardwalk Hall Hall of Fame during a special ceremony prior to the start of Sunday’s NJSIAA Tournament finals.
“It’s pretty unreal,” Ashnault said moments before being honored on the floor of the arena. “Right now (the moment) really hasn’t set in.”
Ashnault, who is now wrestling at Rutgers University as a redshirt freshman, ended his scholastic career with a 170-0 record.
South Plainfield coach Kevin McCann joined Ashnault’s parents, Bill and Sue, during the special presentation.
“He deserves everything that he’s accomplihsed and his hard work is paying off,” McCann said. “Topped off with an honor down here, it’s incredible.”
Delbarton’s Mike Grey is the only other wrestler to be inducted into Boardwalk Hall’s Hall of Fame.
NJSIAA executive director Mr. Steve Timko and Fran Rodowicz of Boardwalk Hall joined Ashnault for the presentation.
