Parker Groves went from the ultimate low to the ultimate high in the span of two innings Thursday.
The Appleton East senior came on in relief in the bottom of the fifth with the bases loaded and two out against Fond du Lac and promptly gave up a grand slam to cap an eight-run inning for the Cardinals, one that erased a 7-0 deficit.
But then Groves came up in the bottom of the sixth with the bases loaded and cleared them all with a double off the left-center wall to lift the Patriots to a 10-9 Fox Valley Association victory at East.
“It shows a lot of resolve, a lot of guts to come back like that,” Appleton East assistant coach Ben Paton said of his team. “There was a lot of emotion, giving (the lead) up and getting it back in one swing.”
Groves finished 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of doubles, a home run and five RBI.
“(Groves) came in in a tough spot (in the fifth). But absolutely that was the best game of his career,” Paton said.
