Abdiaziz Aden and Najeeb Mahmoud combined to score all three St. Cloud Apollo goals to help the Eagles boys soccer team beat St. Cloud Cathedral 3-1 in nonconference play in the opening game of the season at Whitney Park.
Aden scored two goals, one in the first half and the other in the second. Mahmoud scored the third goal later in the second half.
Alex Peterson scored the lone goal for Cathedral. Tommy Schmidt recorded eight saves for the Crusaders.
St. Francis 7, Rocori 4
ST. FRANCIS – Junior Trevon Mattson scored the first three goals in Rocori program history, and the Spartans led St. Francis 4-2 with 18 minutes to go, but the Fighting Saints scored five unanswered goals down the stretch and rallied to win the nonconference matchup.
Sophomore Uriel Rodriguez had the final goal for Rocori, which led 2-1 at halftime. Johnathan Ward had 15 saves in net for the Spartans.
“For the first game we’ve ever played, I thought we played well,” Rocori coach Ryan Finnefrock said. “We had a great game for 60 out of 80 minutes. So we’re happy with it. We still have a lot of work to do. But this wasn’t too bad for our first time out.”
St. Cloud Tech 1, Monticello 1
After St. Cloud Tech took an early 1-0 lead, Monticello scored late in the first half to earn a tie in a nonconference game at Husky Stadium.
Mohamud Adan scored the goal for Tech.
The Tigers outshot Monticello 18-7 in the game.
Willmar 3, St. Cloud Cathedral 0
WILLMAR – Three different Willmar players scored goals in a nonconference victory over St. Cloud Cathedral.
Shelby Schneider, Ingred Lindgren and Jordan Sankey each scored a goal for the Cardinals.
Princeton 2, Sauk Rapids 0
PRINCETON – Alanna Mattson and Maggie Peterson had goals for Tigers who downed the Storm in nonconference play in their season opener.
Sauk Rapids (0-1) had seven shots on goal and hit the crossbar twice.
Stillwater 7, St. Cloud Tech 0
STILLWATER – Gaime Purdie tallied three goals to lift Stillwater to a nonconference win.
St. Cloud Tech (0-1) put six shots on net.
St. Cloud Apollo 18, Rocori 0
St. Cloud Apollo breezed past Rocori in a Central Lakes Conference matchup at Michie Field. It marked the first game in program history for the Spartans.
Calli Lynch and Karla Hiltner each scored four goals to lead the Eagles. Emily Eiynck and Sydney Swanson added three goals each.
Big Lake 3, St. Cloud Apollo 0
Josie Thelen had five kills, but Big Lake defeated St. Cloud Apollo 25-21, 25-16, 25-21 in nonconference play.
Wayzata 4, St. Cloud Tech 3
WAYZATA – Katelyn Tarrolly won at No. 2 sinlges, but the Tigers fell to the Trojans in a nonconference match.
Also picking up a win for Tech (0-1) was Jill Kedrowski at No. 3 singles (6-3, 7-5). Wayzata is ranked fourth in the state in Class 2A.
Sauk Rapids 100, Holdingford 81
SAUK RAPIDS – Sam Sell won diving with a score of 185.85 as Sauk Rapids defeated Holdingford in a nonconference dual meet.
Ella Benoit won the 200 individual medley (2:35.42), Larissa Kleen won the 100 butterfly (1:08.31) and Anna Lucas won the 500 freestyle (5:53.77).
Holdingford’s Gabby Langerud won the 50 (26.14) and 100 (58.44) freestyle.
