Assumption and Mercy advanced to the championship of the state field hockey tournament after winning their respective semifinal games Monday night.
Assumption (21-3-1) beat Sacred Heart 1-0 and Mercy (17-9-1) beat Manual 3-2 on penalty strokes at Bellarmine University’s Owsley B. Frazier Stadium. The winners play for the state title Wednesday at 7.
• Assumption-Sacred Heart: Bailey Higgins scored off an assist from Rebecca Theineman 13:52 into the first half, and the Rockets shut down their archrival Valkyries (24-3-2) the rest of the way.
Sacred Heart got away just three shots — two on goal — while Assumption had 18 shots, 11 on goal.
• Mercy-Manual: The Jaguars scored in the final minute of regulation to force overtime, then beat the Crimsons on penalty strokes.
Kylee Daugherty scored off an assist from Katie Hollkamp with 53 seconds left to tie the game at 2-2. After the 10-minute extra period came and went without a goal, the teams went to strokes, where Mercy outscored Manual 3-1.
Torie Daugherty scored Mercy’s first goal 2:08 before halftime. Jordan Thompson and Sarah Biggs had second-half goals for Manual (16-6-2).
• Seven members of the all-tournament team – from teams eliminated before the championship game – were announced Monday night. They are Katie Walsh, Ballard; Hana Priddy, Presentation; Charlotte Happel, Collegiate; Shelby Easley, Christian Academy; Caroline Krill, Sacred Heart; Kate Vernezia, Sacred Heart; Sarah Biggs, Manual; and Jordan Thompson, Manual.
The complete all-tournament team will be announced after Wednesday’s final.
