FORT VALLEY – Natalie McEver has been playing the game of softball for the past 9 years including 4 as a starter for the Peach County Lady Trojans. A constant threat in the lineup every time the black and yellow comes to play.
“She’s an all around athlete”, says assistant coach, Keith Barker. “I can put her at any position and she does very well at it. Right now she is our leading hitter batting over .500 with several big clutch hits on the season this far.”
This season Natalie sees most of her time on the corners trying to keep the dugout positive and the her teammates pumped.
McEver says, “I just focus to get everybodys mindset right and make sure they are game ready. I would like to say I am a leader by example but I have a big mouth so I tell them what to do.”
Off the diamond, Natalie carries a 3.2 but the senior says she knows that her grade point average is more important than her lofty batting average.
“Well after high school I plan to go to college so I know I will need good grades to go there”, says the senior infielder.
Barker adds, “As all of our girls we don’t really have to worry about grades. Our girls are A honor roll students who excel both on and off the field.”
The Lady Trojans are off to an 9-3 start with only one region loss and say they don’t mind sharing the winning headlines with the boys who play on Friday nights.
McEver explains, “Its just good to hear people talking good things about us here like you said its all football over here so its good to hear about softball and on the field we just try to remain composed.”
In 2013, the Lady Trojans experience a taste of success but it wasn’t enough so they want more.
“Well last year we only made it to the first round” , says McEver. “And we didn’t get to advance to the sweet 16 but this year we have high hopes. Our chemistry is amazing and we love each other all over the field and it shows and we just click together.”
And with leadership like Natalie.. its why she deserves our Athlete of the Week.
