Mike Zibrin’s five-hitter led Middletown North past Shore, 3-1, in a Monmouth County Tournament preliminary-round game Saturday.
Zibrin (2-2) struck out six, walked two and allowed one unearned run for the 15th-seeded Lions (5-5). He faced 27 batters and threw 19 first-pitch strikes. Of his 93 pitches, 69 went for strikes.
The Lions took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Mark Bartel’s suicide squeeze scored Ryan Byrd and Anthony Vetrano.
James Kelly (1-2) suffered the loss for No. 18 Shore (6-6) despite pitching a four-hitter. He struck out 10, walked two and allowed three unearned runs. He went 3-for-3, including a double.
CBA 6, ST. ROSE 5: Ryan Ramiz scored on a bases-loaded walk with one out in the eighth to give the No. 8 Colts a win over the No. 9 Purple Roses in the MCT round of 16.
Winner Andrew Buccellatto pitched the final 11⁄3 innings.
MIDDLETOWN SOUTH 1, ST. JOHN VIANNEY 0: Sophomore Austin Markmann (3-1) tossed a four-hitter, struck out four and walked none for the Eagles in their win over the Lancers in the round of 16.
South scored a first-inning run as Nolan Peerless walked, stole second and sped home on a run-scoring single by Kyle Brey.
With runners at first and second and one out in the sixth, the Lancers lined into a double play.
FREEHOLD TWP. 6, RED BANK 4: Chris Talbott scored two runs and stole three bases for the No. 13 Patriots in their MCT preliminary-round win over the No. 20 Bucs (4-8).
Winner Chris Rose went 1-for-3 and scored one run. Jose Diaz pitched a scoreless seventh and struck out two for the save. Teammate Nick Cardace went 2-for-3 and drove in one run. Teammate Sam Goldsmith hit an RBI double and scored one run.
The Patriots’ Kyle Fenton scored one run, plated one and stole two bases.
FREEHOLD TWP. 4, RED BANK CATHOLIC 3: Talbott went 2-for-4, including a double, scored two runs and was the winning pitcher, propelling the Patriots (9-3) past the No. 4 Caseys (9-4) in the round of 16.
Talbott scattered seven hits, struck out one and walked one as the Patriots won their sixth straight game and eight of their last nine. Cardace went 2-for-3, including a triple, scored one run and drove in two. Cardace tripled home two runs and Joe Silvestrone lofted a sacrifice fly as the Patriots took a 3-0 first-inning lead.
Red Bank Catholic’s Matt Kurdewan went 2-for-3, slugging a two-run homer and a solo shot.
MANALAPAN 4, MONMOUTH 1: Jake Sadowitz’s four-hitter paced the Braves past the Falcons in an MCT round of 16 game.
Sadowitz struck out two. Stephen Hansen keyed a three-run third inning with a two-run double. Dan Russo plated an insurance run in the sixth with a suicide squeeze. Teammate John Diana went 2-for-4. Monmouth’s John Bonczyk and Dan Valerio each had two hits.
ST. JOHN VIANNEY 16, LONG BRANCH 4: Anthony Santoro stroked his 100th career hit — a grand slam — and went 3-for-3 to lead the Lancers past the Green Wave in MCT preliminary-round action.
COLTS NECK 4, MANALAPAN 3: Paul Marinello was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning, giving the Cougars a win over the Braves in Shore Conference Class A North.
Tyler Kay opened with a walk for the Cougars (8-2, 7-2) and sped to third base on an errant throw on a sacrifice bunt by Kyle Murrin. Guiseppe Varile was intentionally walked to load the bases. Marinello was struck by the first offering.
Winner Robbie Warendorf (3-1) tossed a four-hitter. He allowed three unearned runs as the Cougars made five errors. Warendorf struck out seven and walked three.
Kay went 2-for-3 and scored one run. Losing pitcher Nick Serra (2-3) allowed four runs — two earned — in six innings as Manalapan made two miscues. He surrendered five hits and struck out none for the Braves (7-7, 4-5).
Manalapan’s Jake Sadowitz, who went 2-for-3, plated a sixth-inning run with a single for a 3-1 lead.
COLTS NECK 5, MATAWAN 2: Mario Ferraioli and Matt Schaeffer pitched the host Cougars (9-2) past the Huskies (7-5) in nondivisional action.
Ferraioli hurled four innings of no-hit ball, striking out seven and allowing an unearned run. Schaeffer notched the save, surrendering one unearned run over three innings, allowing two hits and striking out one. Colts Neck’s Giannin Magliaro hit a two-run double and Jordan Gonzalez plated a run with an infield out as the Cougars took a 3-0 lead in the first.
LAKEWOOD 4, PRINCETON 3: Billy Figueroa went 2-for-3 and scored one run for the visiting Piners (6-8) in their nonconference win over the Little Tigers.
