In the minutes before the start of St. Mary Magdalen’s (Wilmington, Del.) 14-0 victory over Holy Angels (Newark, Del.) in Sunday’s Catholic Youth Ministry junior varsity football game at Caravel Academy (Bear, Del.) , the Bulldogs gave player Beau Smith a moment of glory.
Running the “Beau Sweep,” a play specifically designed for Smith, he took the hand-off and barreled his way into the end zone for a five-yard touchdown. After he crossed the goal line, members of both teams surrounded Beau and celebrated by yelling his name.
“It feels awesome. I feel so happy, and it’s really to fun to play. I’m happy to run,” Beau proclaimed with pride. “I went to the end zone, threw the ball down and did a touchdown dance. My sister taught me the dance.”
Beau scored the touchdown while hooked up to an oxygen tank that is a result of a medical condition that has affected him throughout his life and has hospitalized him more than 50 times.
