Greer hosts B-HP in round two of the AAA upstate high school football playoffs Friday, Nov. 14, 2014.
GREER — Greer’s unbeaten streak came to an end Friday night at Dooley Field, and it wasn’t pretty for the home team in the second half.
Capitalizing on three Greer turnovers in the third quarter and 204 yards from running back Juwan Abney on the night, Belton-Honea Path beat the Yellow Jackets 55-21 to advance to visit South Pointe next week in the Class AAA playoffs.
Abney had 29 carries in the game, and he scored three touchdowns.
The BHP Bears scored on their first two drives of the game, and they scored 21 points in the third quarter to take control.
“I knew if we played Bear football — I felt deep down from the beginning of the week that we’d be OK,” said BHP coach Russell Blackstone. “We’re a physical football team. We want to pound it. We want to run it. And that’s what we were able to do.”
They were also able to contain Greer running back Adrian McGee until the outcome had been decided, and they kept Greer quarterback Mario Cusano out of rhythm all night. Cusano completed just nine of 22 passes for 95 yards, no touchdown and three interceptions.
Dorian Lindsey caught five passes for 81 yards to lead Greer.
Lindsey, Cusano, McGee and the majority of Greer’s team will return next season — making the Yellow Jackets the favorite to repeat as Peach Blossom Conference champions — but their state championship chase in 2014 has ended as BHP’s moves on.
Kameron Burton ran for 112 yards for BHP. Lance Jones kicked field goals of 30 and 35 yards.
Jake Hilberts grabbed an interception for the BHP defense, then grabbed a touchdown pass from quarterback Austin Estes a few plays later as the Bears took command in the second half.
