Senior right-hander Brandon Bielak scattered three hits in a complete-game effort and drove in the winning run in the home sixth with a fielder’s choice groundout to lead the St. Joseph High School baseball team to a 2-1 victory over Marist at Diamond Nation on Sunday night.
Bielak fanned nine, raising his strikeout total on the year to 18. He will attend the University of Notre Dame on a full baseball scholarship in the fall.
“He was not as dominating as I’ve seen him, but he threw really well today,” said St. Joseph coach Steve Bucchignano, noting Bielak threw an economical 77 pitches. “He threw a lot of strikes and worked ahead in the count. When you are able to do that against a good team, it just helps finish off hitters.”
The Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third when Nick Johnson scored on Mark Bobko’s single. Marist knotted the contest at in the fifth. Bobko snapped the deadlock when he crossed on Bielak’s groundout in the sixth.
“I think it’s a great momentum swing for us as we get back into conference play next week,” Bucchignano said of the win. “We are young in some parts of the lineup, and for our guys to play tonight in this (Sunday Series) event, under these circumstances, if great for their experience.”
The Falcons, who improved to 2-1, face Piscataway today.
