Bishop Gorman football coach Tony Sanchez says he remains focused on Saturday’s state championship game against Reed, despite continuing talk that he will be named the next coach UNLV.
Sanchez called a report Wednesday that said he will be named the Runnin’ Rebels coach next week “premature.” According to the report, the only thing remaining is for Sanchez to be approved by the state Board of Regents.
Sanchez declined to say if he has been offered the position. Bobby Hauck resigned earlier this week.
“No decision has been made by either party,” he told the Las Vegas Sun. “I haven’t made a decision on what I am going to do.”
As to the notion that he will be named coach next week, Sanchez said, “Who knows what will transpire in the next week.”
Gorman, the No. 1 team in USA TODAY High School Sports’ Super 25, is attempting to win its sixth consecutive state title, coinciding with Sanchez’s arrival in 2009.
Sanchez would become only the third coach to jump from high school to head coach at the Division I/Football Bowl Subdivision level.
