North Rockland freshman Nick Sparta bowled his first 300 game in a JV match at Hi-Tor Lanes Thursday night.
“It was very nerve-racking for me,” Sparta said. “My legs were shaking and I thought to myself, ‘What if I mess it up?'”
North Rockland coach Joan Nelson noted the “energy started to build” around the sixth frame for Sparta. She can tell the first-year player was getting nervous and tired to calm him down.
“In the ninth frame it was at a standstill,” Nelson said. “We just told him to stay calm and focus on one bowl at a time.”
In the final frame, Sparta felt he bowled the ball “too far out,” but on this day fate wouldn’t have it any other way.
“My brother is pretty worked up over it,” Sparta jokingly said about achieving 300 before his older sibling, Nino Sparta, currently on North Rockland varsity. “He’s older than me and he’s never done it.”
Sparta was the youngest player to ever roll 300 in Joan Nelson’s 10-year tenure as the Red Raiders coach.
