Bowling Green boys reach state soccer final

By

Bowling Green’s Purples (21-1-1) earned a spot in the KHSAA boys’ soccer state finals on Thursday night with a goal early in the second half against top-ranked Paul Dunbar on their way to a 2-0 shutout of the Bulldogs (19-5-3).

Just four minutes into the second half, Bowling Green’s Gilio Aviles took a shot close to the goal and the shot was deflected by Dunbar defenders. However, David Mason punched in the rebound.

Bowling Green added icing with just 1.8 seconds left as Arif Smajlovic scored on a breakaway.

The Purples, who won the state title in 2006, will take on Scott, making its first trip to the finals.

Bowling Green 2 (David Mason, Arif Smajlovic), Dunbar 0.
