Boys' All 'A' Classic | Mack, Schmitt pace Holy Cross win


Dominique Mack scored 22 points and Jack Schmitt added 21 to lead Holy Cross to a 68-55 victory over University Heights on Thursday in a first-round boys’ basketball game in the Touchstone Energy All “A” Classic state tournament at the Frankfort Convention Center.

The Cougars (15-4) shot 53.5 percent (23 of 43) and won the rebounding battle 28-16 to advance to play Lexington Christian (13-7) in today’s 5 p.m. quarterfinal.

Lexington Christian beat Elliott County 62-47 earlier Thursday.

Ryan Nalley pitched in nine points and nine rebounds and Norman Ellis had eight points for Holy Cross. The Cougars led 17-15 after one quarter and took control in the second, opening with a 13-3 run for a 30-18 lead on Mack’s layup with 4:31 left.

University Heights (12-8) pulled within 34-31 early in the third quarter, but never got closer. Lamontas Johnson scored 15 points to lead the Blazers.

* Dominique Compton made two free throws with 14 seconds left to seal Green County’s victory over Kentucky Country Day in a first-round game.Green County 69, Kentucky Country Day 66:

KCD had a final shot to tie the score, but Colin Ferguson’s 3-point attempt at the buzzer missed.

Compton scored 21 points to lead Green County (11-8), which shot 57.1 percent (24 for 42). The Dragons will face Newport Central Catholic in today’s 6:30 p.m. quarterfinal.

Ferguson led the Bearcats (13-8) with 17 points. Malyiek McCray (16 points, six rebounds, five assists) and Anthony Mathis (14 points) also had big games.

Jordan Tallon’s 3-pointer pulled KCD within 67-66 with 20 seconds left before Compton sank his two free throws for the final margin.

After jumping out to a 19-8 lead after the first quarter, Lexington Christian (13-7) cruised to the victory over Elliot County (13-7). The Eagles were led by Michale Young with 13 points and eight rebounds in the win. The Lions were led by Logan Nickell with 11.* Lexington Christian 62, Elliot County 47:

Newport Central Catholic jumped out to a 21-19 lead at the half over Owensboro Catholic and never looked back. The Thoroughbreds (17-3) were led by Zach Pangallo, who hit three 3-point baskets and a total of 19 points for the game. The Aces (11-7) were led by Ryan Carter with nine points and eight rebounds.* Newport Central Catholic 60, Owensboro Catholic 39 :
