Sheboygan North’s night started with a short ceremony honoring longtime coach Tom Desotell’s recent 600th career win last week against Green Bay Southwest.
Kyle Monroe and the rest of the Ashwaubenon boys basketball players scuttled North’s aim at giving Desotell win No. 601 on Friday night, though. Monroe finished with a game-high 21 points and the Jaguars handed North a 54-22 loss at home.
“I think we talk about it all the time that our shooting can affect the rest of our game, and we were just uncharacteristically shooting poorly tonight,” Desotell said. His team hit just eight of 41 shots from the field.
Davis Larson led North (4-10, 4-5 Fox River Classic Conference) with 10 points. Nick Rudolph and Santos Valenciana each finished with four points.
“We did a reasonably good job on the board. But you’ve got to make shots,” Desotell said. North out-rebounded Ashwaubenon 34 to 20.
Bryce VanLaanen added 15 points behind Monroe to help lead the offense for Ashwaubenon (13-2, 8-1 FRCC).
Desotell became the state’s fourth all-time most winningest boys basketball coach after picking up his 600th career win — all of them with Sheboygan North, where he’s coached since the late 1970s — last Friday at Southwest.
He spoke briefly at the ceremony before Fridays’ game, and his players held up a large banner hailing their coach’s “most wins in Division 1 history.”
“I certainly appreciate the recognition tonight,” he said in remarks during the celebration.
