Joe Zayer scored with nine seconds left to give visiting Clarkstown South the a 72-70 win over Spring Valley Friday.

“We ran a little bit of a delay and there was 38 seconds left, it was a fresh shot clock,” Clarkstown South coach Matt Backs said. “We got it down to 13 seconds. We ran a ball screen play for Joe with the purpose to draw everyone so we can get Conor (McGuiness) a look. They let him (Zayer) drive it. Joe got to the paint and scored.

“It was really exciting. The kids did a great job executing and the end of the game. They have all year. It was really nice to go in and steal one from Spring Valley.”

In Backs’ four years Backs as Vikings coach, his squad has a .500 record against the Tigers.

“We’ve always played them very tough,” Backs said. “That’s a major accomplishment and a testament to our kids and the hard work they put in. The Tigers have two definite Division I kids. It says a lot about our kids are definitely ready to play at the next the level should they get that opportunity.”

Zayer (19 points) was in foul trouble most of the game.
