Somers coach Chris DiCintio knew he needed a big performance out of senior guard Matt Moros entering Monday’s game against Ossining.

With starters Conor Cousin, the team’s second-leading scorer, and Matt Arita out for the first half due to a violation of team rules, DiCintio made it clear what was needed of his team’s leading scorer during the pregame walkthrough.

“I told (Moros)… ‘Our energy from our offense is going to come through you,’ ” DiCintio said. ” ‘We’re giving you free reign to do what you do best. You’ve been scoring for us all year, but tonight you’ve got to find that something even more special.’ “

Moros responded, pouring in 37 points to help the Tuskers cruise to a 68-49 win against Ossining in the championship of the 17th annual George Budries tournament at Yorktown.

The 5-foot-9 guard scored 16 points in the first quarter, including five 3s, as the Tuskers built a 27-12 lead.

“With any shooter, it’s got to be in rhythm and (you’ve) got to get hot and keep shooting,” said Moros, who was named the game’s MVP. “I kept shooting and kept making them, so it worked out well.”

Moros scored 15 points in the second quarter as Somers (7-7) held a 47-24 lead over Ossining (5-6) at halftime.

“Great players rise in the opportune times when you need it most,” DiCintio said. “He knew that he was going to have to carry a load of scoring.”

DiCintio credited his entire team with not letting up despite playing half the game without two of its regular starters.

“I thought the kids that either come off the bench or don’t get much time came in today with the right energy,” DiCinitio said. “They had great composure and it just showed how deep the team really is.”

Somers has won five of its last six after starting the season 2-6. DiCintio said he was proud none of his players ever showed signs of quitting early in the season.

“A lot of kids would have buried their heads in the sand and just kind of went through the motions,” DiCintio said. “This team never, not one single practice, did they ever come in and not believe in themselves.”
