Normally, playing the 23rd-ranked team in the state smack in the middle of a three-games-in-three-days stretch would be a nightmare, but not for New Rochelle.
Friday’s game against visiting White Plains was bookended by road dates against Mount Vernon and Long Island Lutheran, ranked No. 4 and No. 9, respectively, in the Class AA state poll.
The Huguenots played with the desperation of a team that needed to win and they did, beating White Plains 69-59 to earn arguably their best victory all season.
Senior Derek Dorn scored 20 points for New Rochelle (6-10). He did not make a field goal after a hot first quarter, but shot 11 for 12 from the line, including a perfect 10 for 10 during a foul-plagued fourth quarter.
Junior Justin Alleyne hit for 18 points and played strong defense against White Plains freshman Jordan Tucker, who finished with 16.
The Tigers (14-3) — whose only other losses came against Mount Vernon — were led by senior Mike DeMello (24 points). He briefly led his team to a 36-35 edge in the third, but Alleyne and senior Alex Tuci (15 points) spearheaded an 11-0 response.
New Rochelle will face last year’s Class AA state Federation runner-up Long Island Lutheran at 2 p.m. Saturday at Uniondale High in the Upstate-Downstate Challenge.
