Palisade Prep’s Kevin Sabino became the first player in program history to score 1,000 points as the Phoenix cruised to an 89-60 win at Biondi Monday.
Sabino, who finished with 27 points, eight rebounds and four assists, hit a 3 with four minutes left in the fourth quarter to reach the milestone. The senior, whose first season on varsity as a freshman was also the program’s first, appreciates the fact he is the first 1,000-point scorer.
“It means a lot,” Sabino said. “That will be there forever. Nobody can take that away from me.”
Sabino likely won’t be Palisade Prep’s only player to have scored 1,000 points for long. Teammate Isaiah Ward, who had 33 points, nine rebounds and five assists, is only eight points away from 1,000 and will likely reach the milestone in the Phoenix’s first playoff game.
“It’s very fulfilling as a coach,” said Palisade Prep coach Sean Stahn, who has coached both players since they were freshmen. “Kevin and Isaiah both work very hard at basketball. I’m definitely proud of them.”
Palisade Prep (15-3) enters sectionals looking to make a run in Class B after winning a sectional title in Class C last season.
“I felt like I just wanted to get it done before playoffs,” said Sabino of scoring his 1,000th point. “I didn’t want to worry about it during playoffs. … I wanted to focus on getting back to the County Center.”
