Panas was able to withstand a late rally by host North Salem to hold on for a 49-46 win.
Tyler Mason made a layup off an inbound pass from Tom Frost with 17 seconds left to give the Panthers a 47-46 lead.
Mason’s late bucket helped the Panthers avoid a huge collapse on Tuesday. The Tigers held a 34-19 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
“Its not a beauty contest,” Panas coach Shawn Sullivan said. “At the end of the season an ugly win still counts in the win column.”
The Tigers tied the game at 43-43 with 1:20 left. Mason (14 points, eight rebounds) made a 14-foot jumper from the wing to give Panas a 45-43 lead with just over a minute left.
North Salem’s Thomas Bond (23 points) nailed a 3 to give the Tigers a 46-45 lead with 40 seconds left.
But Frost (eight points) found Mason under the basket for the game winner.
On the ensuing North Salem possession, Panas’ Tim McCauley (seven points) stole the ball with five seconds remaining, was fouled, and knocked down two free throws. North Salem had a chance to tie the game with 1.9 seconds left but couldn’t.
Sullivan credited Tigers’ coach Henry Sassone for having his team slow the pace of the game, which the Panthers aren’t accustomed to.
“That was the slowest-paced game we’ve played all year,” Sullivan said. “If teams are going to take air out of ball we need to be able to adjust.”
